Macaron, Macron, or Macaroon? Clearing Up the Confusion

Posted by Heriots Patisserie Main Account on

If you’ve ever hesitated at the patisserie counter, on a spelling test, or in conversation because of these tricky words, you’re not alone. Macaron, macron, and macaroon look and sound similar, but they couldn’t be more different. Let’s break them down so you can impress both your tastebuds and your vocabulary.

Macaron: The Chic French Cookie
Pronunciation: mah-kah-ROHN (rhymes with “tone”)
What it is: A delicate French meringue-based sandwich cookie.
Macarons are made with almond flour, sugar, and egg whites, forming two crisp yet chewy shells with a creamy filling sandwiched in between. These colourful treats come in endless flavours — from pistachio and rose to chocolate and salted caramel.
They’re elegant, tricky to master, and utterly photogenic; perfect for weddings, tea parties, or simply indulging yourself.

Macron: The Linguistic Mark
Pronunciation: MAY-kron or MAK-ron
What it is: A line (¯) placed over a vowel to indicate it’s pronounced long.
For example, in phonetics, the word ōcean has a macron over the “o” to show it sounds like “oh.”
It has nothing to do with cookies or desserts, but it’s a handy tool in linguistics, dictionaries, and when learning languages like Latin or Māori.
Fun fact: Macron is also the surname of Emmanuel Macron, President of France - but that’s just a coincidence!

Macaroon: The Coconut Treat
Pronunciation: mack-ah-ROON (rhymes with “spoon”)
What it is: A chewy cookie, often made with shredded coconut.
Macaroons are typically dense, sweet, and moist, sometimes dipped in chocolate. They’re popular during Passover because they don’t contain flour, and they’re much easier to make than macarons.

While they may share a name origin with macarons (both come from the Italian maccarone, meaning “paste”), these are completely different cookies and much less fussy to bake.

And if you’re now craving a proper macaron, we’ve got you covered handmade macarons are available at Heriots, crafted with care and bursting with flavour.
